Employee Recognition That Works: A Real Example with Big Results
The Powerful Impact of a Simple Gesture of Recognition
What happens when we take a moment to recognize the contributions, efforts, and sacrifices of our employees?
A little attention can go a long way. When we express genuine appreciation, it creates a sense of belonging, pride, and engagement. People feel valued, not just for what they do, but for who they are.
The result? More joy, motivation, and connection at work, as well as greater loyalty to the team, the leader, and the organization.
If the impact is so significant, then why don’t we do it more often?
Some common reasons include:
-
Lack of time
-
Underestimating the long-term benefits of simple gestures
-
Uncertainty about what to do
-
Belief that it won’t make a difference
As you may have noticed from my previous articles and interventions, servant leadership is central to my management philosophy. I believe in putting myself at the service of my team, offering them the tools, support, and environment they need to thrive. When employees feel seen, supported, and valued, they give their best, not because they have to, but because they want to.
A Real Example with Big Results
A Holiday Gesture With Lasting Impact
Let me share a real example of how a small gesture created a big ripple effect.
Back in 2017, I was a night-shift production supervisor, working 12-hour shifts on a 3-2-2-3 schedule — 84 hours every two weeks, including weekend rotations from Friday evening to Monday morning.
Like many others at the time, we were dealing with a labor shortage. To maintain operations, we brought in agency workers, many of whom were immigrants new to the country. Some of them spent up to three hours commuting each way before and after their shifts.
Think about that: After 12 hours of physically demanding work, they had only 6 hours left in the day to eat, see their family, and sleep. The level of dedication and sacrifice was immense.
So, with the holiday season approaching, I wanted to show our gratitude in a meaningful way, something simple yet heartfelt. With the support of my management team (thank you Chantal, Sonia, and Valérie!), we came up with an idea: a dessert celebration on the last day before the holiday break.
The importance of gratitude to your employees for a positive work environment
The plan was this:
-
Each department would bring desserts to share
-
The company would provide coffee
-
We’d offer a bit of extra break time for everyone
I committed to this initiative without initially clearing it with my boss — not the best practice, I admit! 😊
This is when the lack of trust between departments comes to the fore and my group tells me: Yes, but the manufacturing guys (those who make the products) will eat all the food without providing desserts.
The solution: All departments must provide desserts if they want to participate.
As soon as I presented the idea to our VP, emphasizing that many agency workers couldn’t attend the company Christmas party, he approved the coffee budget within two minutes. I also asked for a 15-minute break extension, and he agreed to that as well. Thank you, Charles.
How a simple gesture of recognition can change the dynamics of the company
In this picture you can see the result and the quantity of desserts that the employees provided. Way beyond what we expected.
I used the extra time of the lunch break to give a little thank you speech for the efforts that everyone brought to work.
Turning skepticism into participation
Initially, there was some hesitation. Some team members worried that the manufacturing group would enjoy the desserts without contributing. The solution? Everyone had to bring something to participate, no exceptions.
The result? Beyond expectations.
Every team pitched in. The tables were overflowing with desserts. During the extended lunch break, I gave a short speech to thank everyone for their incredible efforts.
I saw employees, especially those from agencies, light up with joy. Some piled their plates with six to ten different treats! We had nearly 200 people, and yet, there were still desserts left for the next break.
Cost vs. Impact
Company investment:
-
$250 in coffee
-
15 extra minutes of break time
My personal investment:
-
20 minutes to pitch the idea and organize it
Impact:
-
High morale
-
Strengthened interdepartmental trust
-
Employees feeling recognized, appreciated, and part of something bigger
Agency workers, who are often overlooked, felt seen and valued. Employees talked about this initiative for weeks. And all of this came from one small act of thoughtful leadership.
Recognition: A High-Return Investment
You don’t need an elaborate budget or a trip to the tropics to make your employees feel special. Sometimes, it just takes a little creativity and a genuine desire to put people first.
If you’re looking for simple and effective ways to recognize your team, I’d be happy to brainstorm ideas with you.
